Olympian Sam Cross, part of Team GB’s Rugby 7s, visited Rhiw Syr Dafydd Primary School today (Friday 9 September) to officially open their new Multi Use Games Area (MUGA). ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

The MUGA was developed to make the playground area a more structured place for the pupils. Taking the shape of a sports court, the area can be used for numerous games including hockey, netball, football and cricket. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Since being built the MUGA has hosted several after school activities and is very popular during break and lunch times for the kids to practice their sports and play games. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Funded partly by the school’s budget and a generous donation from the PTA, the school also held a sponsored event, through the summer, which raised an incredible £8000 enabling the new area to be built. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Craig George, Head Teacher said, “The MUGA is an area where pupils can develop their physical skills in a safe environment. It will be used by pupils during break times and will also host physical education lessons. As a school we place great emphasis on health and fitness and the new area will assist in developing this.” ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Cllr Derek Havard Cabinet Member for Education and Lifelong Learning said “I am sure this new Multi Use Games Area will be a great investment for the school. Not only is it sure to encourage outdoor play but will certainly motivate children to take part in more physical activity, ultimately helping their health and fitness. Also, well done to all those who participated in the sponsored event over the summer, what an incredible amount of money to have risen and thank you to the PTA for the incredible amount of money they invested into the MUGA. I am sure the children of Rhiw Syr Dafydd Primary are beyond pleased with their new area.” ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌
