Pupils Awarded At 20mph Road Sign Competition

Pupils from Bryn, Derwyn Deg and Ty Sign Primary Schools were all invited to Ty Penallta, Caerphilly County Borough offices, on Thursday 14 July to be awarded for their creative and imaginative 20mph posters they had produced. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The competition asked the three schools to design a poster, which would be incorporated into their 20mph limit sign outside their schools, in order to help reduce the speed of traffic. The brief stated the poster must include the theme of going slow or slowing down to 20mph. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Susan J Davies, Road Safety Project Officer, said “The standard of entries was exceptional which made it a very difficult job for the Road Safety team and engineers to pick winners.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The event was attended by the Deputy Mayor Cllr Bevan, cabinet member Cllr Tom Williams and Head of Engineering Services Terry Shaw, who awarded the winners, Esther Knight- Webley from Bryn Primary, Hollie Seldon and Megan Sweet, from Derwen Deg Primary and Callum Martin from Ty Sign Primary School, as well as the runners-up, with their prizes. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Cllr Tom Williams, cabinet member for highways, transportation and engineering said, “What a pleasure it has been to view all the incredibly creative pieces produced by the children, it was a very difficult decision when choosing the winners. This competition is a great way to actively involve young people into the importance of road safety and road awareness. Well done to everyone who participated and congratulations to the winners.
