School Pupils Take Part In National Tree Week
To celebrate National Tree Week (28th November to 4th December), Caerphilly county borough school pupils have taken part in activity workshops to learn more about trees and the environment.
Pupils from years 3 and 4 of Pentwynmawr Primary School, Ty Newydd Primary School and Pantside Primary School attended activity workshops throughout National Tree Week, during which they took part in a number of activities including a maths trail, where pupils were taught how to calculate the cost of repairing a fence and learning how to measure a tree’s age. Games were also played which exercised pupils mathematical skills in dividing, multiplying, subtraction and addition.
The activity workshops also included a story-telling session, where pupils listened to a story and were then asked to create their own story about a woodland animal while exploring the nearby woodland. This was followed by hot chocolate around a warm fire.
At the end of the session, each primary school helped to plant a native cherry tree at Pantside Community Woodland Park.
Cllr Ken James, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Planning and Sustainable Development said: “I am delighted that so many pupils were given the opportunity to take part in National Tree Week, which celebrates the launch of the winter tree planting season. Well done to all pupils who took part in the tree planting, which will benefit the local area in years to come”.
The workshops were funded through the PLANT! Project – a Welsh Government initiative to plant a tree for every baby born or adopted in Wales.
