An Aberbargoed resident is to undertake a gruelling 4 day bike ride from the South Wales Valleys to the Somme battlefields of northern France. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Stephen Davies, a Caretaker at Ysgol Bro Sannan in Aberbargoed, will be raising money for SSAFA – the armed forces charity. He will set off on the epic journey at the end of August and is appealing for sponsorship to help raise funds for this worthy cause. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

In 1914, special ‘cycling battalions’ were set up by the British Army and bicycles were deployed to the front line to assist with the movement of troops, reconnaissance and communications. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

“I believe, by participating in this bike ride to the Somme, it is a great way to pay respect to the cyclists and all other members of the armed forces who have volunteered for their country and often made the ultimate sacrifice for our future freedom,” said Stephen. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

“Any contributions towards my appeal would be very much appreciated and I’m very much looking forward to taking part in this challenge for such a well deserving cause,” he added. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌
