Sport Caerphilly Celebrate Popular Sport Schemes
Throughout the summer, three leisure centres in the borough have been running sport schemes for children to enjoy while being out of school.
Caerphilly, Heolddu and Newbridge held the sports activities during the weekdays for children aged between 7 and 11.
The schemes enabled children to participate in team and individual sports such as football, badminton and swimming as well as enjoy Olympic themed days to celebrate the event in Rio.
Proving to be extremely popular, over 3600 children took part in the sports schemes over the summer holidays.
Supported by key partners such as Whitchurch Valleys Hock Club, Newport County AFC and Welsh Cycling, the organisations often visited the leisure centres to hold days dedicated to their sports.
Danny Thomas, Sports Development Officer said, “The sports scheme continues to grow year by year and we will continue to strive to keep improving each summer. It is great to see the number of participants has significantly risen compared to last year.
He continues, “The support from our key partners such as leisure, local community councils, national governing bodies and community clubs helps the programme to cater for all children and these relationships will only help us to keep developing the programme.”
Cllr Nigel George, cabinet member for community and leisure services said, “These summer sports schemes have proved to be extremely popular. Sport Caerphilly staff have worked tirelessly to provide these activities for the children and it is great to hear their hard work has paid off with the amount of participants.”
