St Helens Primary are triumphant during battery recycling initiative
St Helens Roman Catholic Primary School in Caerphilly were recently crowned overall battery recycling winners on Friday 23rd September.
Out of the 53 schools which took part, St Helens RC Primary School were named top in the medium school category, as well as overall winners after collecting a staggering 400kg of household batteries which were collected by pupils, teachers and family members.
Members of the St Helens Primary School Eco Committee were presented with the awards by Cllr Dianne Price, Mayor of Caerphilly county borough.
Each school was placed into a category depending on the size of the school. The winners of each category are as follows:
- Small school (up to 140 pupils) – 1st Cwmaber Junior School
- Medium school (141 – 280 pupils) – 1st Helens Primary School
- Large (281+ pupils) – 1st Ysgol Gymraeg Caerffili
The 14,500 school pupils and teachers who took part in the borough-wide competition collected 1945kg of batteries, which will now be recycled and used for building new roads, car manufacturing, food and drink cans and new battery casing.
Cllr Nigel George, Cabinet Member for Community and Leisure Services said: “Well done to everyone who took part in the battery recycling initiative. I am delighted that a fantastic 1945kg of batteries was recycled by pupils and teachers throughout Caerphilly county borough, which can now be recycled and reused”.
