School Is ‘Buzzing’ Thanks To Award Success

Pupils and staff at Ynysddu Primary School are buzzing with excitement after winning a prestigious national award as part of an innovative bee keeping partnership.
Caerphilly county borough council and the Sirhowy Valley Honeybee Company scooped an ‘Eco Schools in the Community Award’ this week at the Tidy Wales Awards 2016.
The recognition was for a scheme called the ‘Sirhowy Valley Honeybee Hive House Project’, which has been developed at Ynysddu Primary School and involved the creation of an interactive Honeybee hive within the school grounds.
The scheme was officially opened by Cllr John Bevan, Deputy Mayor of Caerphilly county borough during a special ceremony which took place within the school grounds back in July.
The pioneering project, which is the first of its kind in the UK, involves an interactive beehive which provides pupils with the opportunity to learn about bees up close.
Cllr Ken James, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Sustainable Development said, “This is excellent news and I’d like to congratulate the partnership on their well-deserved recognition. It’s great to see pupils learning important lessons about sustainability and wildlife preservation at such a young age.”
The pupils from Ynysddu Primary School and Cwmfelinfach Primary School will work with the bee hive house one day a week as part of their enriched curriculum.
Other schools will also have the opportunity to visit the interactive bee hive house where they can take part in an interactive workshop, learning to manage and maintain beehives.
The Project is a partnership between Ynysddu Primary School, the Sirhowy Valley Honeybee Company and Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Policy Team.
It has been funded by the Keep Wales Tidy ‘All Wales Grant’, Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Greener Caerphilly grant as well as the Council’s Regeneration Fund. The project has also received support from the CCBC Policy Team, Ynysddu Primary School and the Sirhowy Valley Honeybee Company Ltd.
