Us Girls Scoop Top National Award
An innovative community regeneration project, aimed at encouraging more girls to lead an active lifestyle, has won a major national award.
Caerphilly Communities First recently won the Us Girls ‘Project of the Year’ at the National Street Games Awards 2016 in Warwick.
Us Girls is a targeted programme aimed at identify females aged 13-19 living in areas of deprivation, who do not participate in sport or physical activity. The project, which is funded by Sport Wales and Welsh Government and managed by the Caerphilly Communities First team, hopes to get more girls fit and active through a range of projects.
“This is a fantastic achievement for Caerphilly County Borough Council and I’d like to congratulate all those involved. Our flagship initiative is changing lives, not just increasing physical activity levels, and hopefully we can encourage even more young females to engage in the Us Girls programme,” said Cllr Ken James, CCBC Cabinet Member for Regeneration.
Over the last year, more than 250 girls across the county borough have participated in the programme, which is having a real positive impact in local communities. The scheme has the highest retention of females taking part in sessions in Wales with a retention rate of 92%.
Caerphilly Communities First was also the only organisation in Britain to be shortlisted for 3 awards at the National Street Games Awards 2016 in different categories.
Partners in the Caerphilly scheme include Creazione, Ty Fesen homeless support, GAVO, Families First, Santander, Nandos and CCBC education services.
