Residents from across Caerphilly county borough are invited to take part in a competition over the next few weeks which aims to help boost recycling of electrical items. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

The council is running the competition to recycle Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) at its Household Waste Recycling Centres over the next few weeks. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Residents are invited to take along any small unwanted electrical items, such as hairdryers, straighteners, toasters, clocks, irons etc, to the recycling centres between 9am and midday on the following days to be in with a chance of winning a prize: ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

  • Trehir – Monday 25th July 2016
  • Penmaen – Wednesday 27th July 2016
  • Full Moon – Monday 1st August 2016
  • Rhymney – Wednesday 3rd August 2016
  • Penallta – Monday 8th August 2016
  • Aberbargoed à Wednesday 10th August 2016

An Amazon Tablet is first prize and a £20 Amazon voucher is second prize – and each Household Waste Recycling Centre has one of each to give away! On arrival at the recycling centre, participants will be asked to complete a short entry form and winners will be randomly selected and notified by Friday 15th August. Residents who bring three or more items for recycling will be entered into the prize draw twice – double the chance of winning a prize! ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Cllr Nigel George, Cabinet Member for Community and Leisure Services said, “The majority of our residents are already doing an excellent job in helping us by recycling their household waste – in fact, during the last three months of 2015 our recycling rate increased by a huge 13% on the year before. That means that 64% of all household waste collected is being recycled, reused or composted. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

“There’s more work to be done though, so I hope residents will take up this electrical item recycling challenge, and who knows, they may even win a prize along the way’. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

This competition is the latest initiative in the council’s drive to further increase recycling rates across the county borough. The council has also been actively encouraging more people to recycle by using an awareness raising campaign ‘Is yours a sin bin?’. As part of this, pupils from a local primary school featured in a series of short videos urging people to recycle correctly and ensure their recycling bin isn’t a ‘sin bin’. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌
