Cardiff Council Reveals Plans for Waste Collection Amidst Further Bin Strikes

Cardiff Council has released details on how waste collections in the city will be affected by further bin strikes after Christmas.
The council’s announcement comes soon after Unite announced that its members at the local authority voted in favour of strike action over a number of local issues, including alleged bullying.
Cardiff Council said at the time that the union’s claims of bullying refer to allegations that were made more than a year ago, and that an independent review found no substance to the allegations.
The strike action, which will come weeks after a two-month period of bin strikes ended, will take place from Thursday December 28 to Thursday January 25.
In its most recent announcement, the council said it aims to run its waste collection service as normal, apart from hygiene waste, and that scheduled collections will be pushed back a day during the first week of the walkout.
The local authority’s statement reads: “Cardiff Council is putting a plan in place to maintain services and we apologise in advance to residents for any inconvenience.
“During the strike we aim to run all collection services as normal, apart from hygiene.
“Anyone registered with the hygiene service will have their hygiene waste collected every fortnight with black bag/black bin waste.
“Due to Boxing Day falling on a Tuesday, waste collections for that week will move back a day beginning on Wednesday, December 27.”

Collections due on Tuesday December 26 will now happen on Wednesday December 27
Collections due on Wednesday December 27 will now happen on Thursday December 28

The council said strike action may cause some disruption and delays and has advised residents to seek out the most up-to-date information on its website.
Recycling centres at Lamby Way and Bessemer Close will remain open during usual operating hours and will not be affected by the strike action.
The council’s statement continues: “During periods of strike action, the council will always prioritise the collection of food waste, general waste and recycling to ensure that food and food waste containers are taken off the streets as quickly as possible, reducing the risk of the bags being split open by birds or animals creating street litter.”
The collection of garden waste and hygiene waste was affected across Cardiff when strike action last took place in the city.
