City’s Education Aims For Excellence

The city council recently announced ‘Cardiff 2020 – Aiming for excellence’, its renewed vision for education and learning for the capital city. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

‘Cardiff 2020’ builds on progress made to deliver improvement in education over recent years, setting out an ambitious programme to ensure that all children and young people in Cardiff have the opportunity to succeed. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The new strategy lists five key goals to deliver these aspirations: ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

• Excellent outcomes for all learners
• A high quality workforce
• 21st Century learning environments
• A self-improving school system
• Schools and Cardiff in partnership

Welcoming the renewed vision, Cabinet Member for Education, Cllr Sarah Merry said: “The actions we have taken to improve standards in education are starting to have a positive effect. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“We are seeing significant improvement across all ‘Key Stages’, particularly in the benchmark indicator of the number of pupils achieving 5 or more A* to C grade GSCEs, including Maths and English or Welsh, which is up by 10 percent since 2012 in the city. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“But we recognise that there is still a lot to do and our ‘Cardiff 2020’ strategy sets out how we, together with our partners from all sectors in the city, will work to deliver continued improvement in education across Cardiff. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“By ensuring that our children and young people have access to the best education, we can help to put them in the strongest possible position to benefit from Cardiff’s growing economy.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
