Event To Mark Launch Of Disability Index
A SPECIAL event has been held to mark the launch of an index which details services available for disabled children and young people in Cardiff.
The purpose of the new Disability Index is to ensure families of children and young people with disabilities or additional needs are kept up to date with the latest information concerning services available to them.
The event was held at Ty Gwyn, Woodlands and Riverbank Schools in Vincent Road, Ely, Cardiff, on Friday, March 17.
Friday’s event was also an opportunity for people to find out about the services and support available to children and young people with disabilities or additional needs in Cardiff.
Those on the Index will be given regular information about new developments and receive the quarterly newsletter “index.”
The Disability Index will also help the service providers to plan their services across the city.
The Index will give them a clearer picture of how many disabled and young children there are in Cardiff and, through Families First grant funding support, enable them to work together with other agencies to help better coordinate the services.
In order to be included on the Disability Index, the child or young person must be 18 or under, have a diagnosed disability or be in the process of a diagnosis, and referral should be made by a health, education or social care professional, although this is not always necessary.
The Cardiff Index is following an existing model being run in the Vale of Glamorgan.
City of Cardiff Council Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Early Years, Children and Families, Cllr Sue Lent, who was at Friday’s event, said: “The launch of the Disability Index is a huge step forward in helping children and young people with disabilities and additional needs in Cardiff.
“It will mean families will be able to receive the very latest information about services available to them on a regular basis.
“By signing up to the register, families will also be helping our team of service providers to be able to effectively coordinate and develop their services across Cardiff.”
