Explore The Trails And Tales Of Cathays Cemetery
Explore the trails and tales of Cathays Cemetery on a guided walk around the atmospheric grounds of the Victorian cemetery.
Now in their third year, the walks give people the chance to learn more about some of the colourful characters buried in the cemetery as students from the University of South Wales don authentic costumes to play the parts of fascinating characters from Cardiff’s past.
The walks last approximately ninety minutes and will take place at 6.30 p.m. and 7.00 p.m. on Tuesday 7th June and at 6.30 p.m. on Tuesday 14th June.
Cabinet Member for Environment, Cllr Bob Derbyshire, said: “These popular walks are a great way to experience history on a personal level. They combine the remarkable knowledge of the Bereavement Services team with the talents of students at the University of South Wales to create a unique opportunity for the residents of Cardiff.”
Residents of the cemetery include the famous pugilist James “Jim” Driscoll commonly known as Peerless Jim, who learned his trade in the boxing ring and used it to fight his way out of poverty; and the 14 year old Louisa Maud Evans who was killed in a freak accident after ascending in a balloon as part of the 1896 Cardiff Exhibition.
Tickets cost £5 and all proceeds will go towards the continued restoration of the chapels and bell tower at the Cemetery.
Tickets must be booked in advance by calling 029 2054 4820 or emailing thornhillreception@cardiff.gov.uk
