New Independent Living Facility Set To Open
Work is nearing completion on a major refurbishment of a former children’s home in the north of the city.
The former care home at 150 Thornhill Road has been converted into eight one- and two-bedroom flats which promote independent living for older people.
Designed around the existing building footprint, each flat will provide modern, flexible and open plan living to enable residents to live independently, and importantly ensure the accommodation can adapt as a resident’s needs change.
All ground floor flats are suitable for wheelchair users, and the building also features scooter charging facilities and a multi-use communal room.
The scheme will be completed in April and tenants for the flats are currently being sourced.
Cabinet Member for Health, Housing and Wellbeing, Cllr Susan Elsmore, said: “We all aware of the demand for new affordable housing units across the city, of all types, including independent living options. So, I warmly welcome this major refurbishment project, which is one of a number of innovative schemes we have that offers improved, sustainable older person’s accommodation.
“These self-contained homes will provide the new residents with independence, but also the benefits of communal facilities so they can remain active and social to prevent loneliness and isolation.”
City Council Leader, Cllr Phil Bale, said: “The conversion of the building into independent living accommodation has provided the City Council with a long term solution to help ensure we are achieving the best value from the buildings we have.”
As part of a wider strategy to provide sustainable, flexible older person’s accommodation, the City Council is also carrying out refurbishment work at Sandown Court in Caerau and has recently consulted on plans for refurbishment at Brentwood Court sheltered housing scheme in Llanishen.
