Rhiwbina Flood Defence Scheme Shortlisted For Engineering Award
Flood defence work in the Rhiwbina area of Cardiff has been shortlisted for a prestigious award.
The Rhiwbina Flood Defence Project has been recognised by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) Wales Cymru in the projects costing under £3million category of their annual awards.
City of Cardiff Council’s Director of City Operations, Andrew Gregory said: “I would like to congratulate the entire Rhiwbina Flood Defence Project team on this nomination and I hope they are successful in June. More than 200 homes and businesses in the Rhiwbina area of Cardiff are now benefitting from a significantly reduced risk of flooding following the completion of this major flood defence scheme.”
The work was carried out after properties in Rhiwbina were hit by floods when brooks running through the area burst their banks in 2009. The defence work, which involved various engineering solutions for flood prevention that were designed to be low impact and sympathetic to the environment, took place on land throughout Rhiwbina adjacent to the three watercourses known as the Nant Briwnant, the Nant Cwmnofydd and the Rhydwaedlyd Brook.
Director ICE Wales Cymru, Keith Jones said: “I am pleased to see such a wide range of projects representing the many aspects of civil engineering across Wales on the final shortlist. We are proud to be able to celebrate the contribution of civil engineering to communities through our Project Awards and I look forward to the winners being announced on 17 June at our Awards ceremony in Cardiff, in the company of the President of the Institution, Sir John Armitt.”
The annual ICE Wales Cymru Project Awards celebrate the contribution of civil engineering to Wales by recognising schemes for their excellence in concept, planning and design, contract management and construction.
