Sneak Peek At New STAR Community Hub
A shiny new hub is taking shape well in the south of the city.
Less than a year since scheme contractors, Willmott Dixon, moved on to site to prepare for the construction of a purpose-built community and leisure facility serving the areas of Splott, Tremorfa, Adamsdown and Roath, STAR hub is on schedule to be completed by this September.
The £6m facility will boast a 25m, five-lane swimming pool, a gym and fitness suite, a new library, multi-use community and leisure rooms as well as space to provide advice services, training rooms and a community café.
The project forms part of the Council’s Community Hubs programme, which is investing in community services and facilities in priority areas, bringing together a wide range of Council and partner services under one roof to make it easier and more convenient for people to access those services.
Cabinet Member for Community Development, Co-operatives and Social Enterprise, Cllr Peter Bradbury said: “Work on the new STAR hub is progressing extremely well and people in the area will have seen how the building has really taken shape over recent weeks.
“Although there’s work still to do before construction is completed later in the year, I have been extremely impressed with what I have seen of the building so far, both inside and out, particularly the swimming pool and the new library space.
“There has been a high level of community interest in this project and the facility will be a real asset for local people. It’s our first fully purpose-built hub and it represents a major investment by the Council into the communities it serves.”
Once the STAR Hub is opened, the existing STAR Centre on Splott Road will close.
