The Summer Reading Challenge Returns

Cardiff Libraries are preparing for an exciting record breaking Summer Reading Challenge in 2016. All children aged between 4 and 12 are being encouraged to join the challenge at their local Library and read 6 books of their choice during the summer holidays. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

This year’s theme ‘Roald Dahl’ celebrates the 100th birthday of the late, great author himself.it will also roll into the ‘City of the Unexpected’ celebrations in September, when Cardiff will transform into all things Roald Dahl celebrating his fascinating imagination and ability to make magic happen. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Last year, over 5,800 children across the city took part in the challenge. As its popularity grows, this year it is hoped even more children in Cardiff will get involved in the UK’s biggest reading event. For every child that completes the challenge they will receive a FREE ice cream sundae from Joes Ice cream, along with a medal and certificate. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Cabinet Member Community, Development. Co-operatives & Social Enterprise, Councillor Peter Bradbury said: “The Summer Reading Challenge is such a fantastic way to keep young children engaged with their education over the school holidays while they enjoy themselves at the same time. This year, we are encouraging as many children as possible in the city will complete the challenge. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“There’s going to be lots of activities happening for children in libraries across the city this summer so if your children are not already members, now is the perfect time to sign them up at your local branch library.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

On Saturday 16th July, Central Library will host a fun day packed full of activities including a treasure hunt, arts and crafts and story time (1pm – 3pm). There will also be a story time taking place at 11.30am in all libraries across the city, giving everyone the opportunity to pledge to take part in the reading challenge, to sign up and get your free reading challenge passport and don’t forget to dress up as your favourite Roald Dahl Character. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
