Cardiff Met Enjoys Bucs Athletics Success
Cardiff Metropolitan University’s Athletics team is celebrating after a fantastic performance at the 2016 BUCS Athletics Championships.
The team finished in second place overall for both the individual and combined team scores, and smashed both Club and Championship Records while taking home a very impressive 13 medals during the weekend event, which took place in Bedford from 30th April – 2nd May.
Adele Nicoll, who studies Sport and Exercise Science at Cardiff Met, picked up both a gold medal in the shot put and a silver medal in the discus events during the championships, beating the Club and Championship Record with her shot put performance. The Cardiff Met women’s 4x100m team also smashed the Club Record as they earned another gold medal win, while Biomedicine and Nutrition student Jonny Hopkins retained his 3000m steeplechase title with a third gold medal for the team.
Other standout performances included Owen Smith in the 400m and Charlotte Wingfield in the 100m who both claimed a silver medal for their hard work, as well as Jac Palmer in the hammer, Mica Moore in the 100m and the 200m, Joe Reid in the 400m and Morgan Jones in the Ambulant 100m, 200m and Long Jump, who all took home bronze medals in their events.
In total, the Cardiff Met team left the event with three gold, three silver and seven bronze medals.
James Thie, Cardiff Met’s Performance Director for Athletics and World, European and Commonwealth 1500m finalist, said: “I am delighted with the team performance from the weekend’s BUCS Athletics Championships, as we were competitive across all disciplines and showed our strength and depth.
“To finish in second place in the individual and combined team scores is a fantastic achievement, and a real testament to the hard work of our athletes, coaches and team staff.”
The team went on to celebrate their success during this week’s Cardiff Met Athletics Union Awards, where gold medal winner Adele also won the title of Sports Personality of the Year.
The BUCS Outdoor Athletics Championships are the first national competition of the season for UK student athletes, and have a reputation for attracting world class athletes.
