Cardiff Met Students Celebrate Global Event
Cardiff Metropolitan University hosted its first ‘Global Week’ event earlier this month to celebrate the cultural diversity of its students and staff.
Following the success of the Global Day celebrations in 2014 and 2015, the event was extended with a range of internationally themed activities taking place at the Llandaff and Cyncoed campus for ‘Global Week’.
The Global Week provided students the opportunity to share, learn and celebrate each other’s values and traditions and encourage conversation, networking and integration between students of different nationalities and backgrounds.
The week boasted a range of activities including a Global Village. The Atrium in CSM was transformed into a Global Village where students from across the world held stalls to showcase their cultures. Students and staff learned about traditions and sampled cuisine from across the world, including Nigeria, Japan, Vietnam, Libya, Qatar, Poland, India, Saudi Arabia, and Caribbean to name a few.
A world map was also displayed where students and staff were encouraged to mark their country of origin with a pin. A total of 217 pins were placed on the map and from this it was evident that Cardiff Met is very much an international university with staff and students coming from all corners of the world.
Other highlights of the week included internationally themed photo booths, Chinese language classes, a Bollywood dance workshop, Chinese painting tuition, a cake sale and a student led carnival themed party. A ‘feed the dragon’ challenge was held at the Cyncoed campus in order to fundraise for Cardiff School of Sport’s Zambia Project.
To finish the week an international party was a great success. Students enjoyed a international themed fashion show, where students showcased their beautiful traditional clothing from their home countries as well as an Eisteddfod themed talent contest in honour of St David’s day.
Natalie Buckland, International Student Support Manager commented, “Expanding this event from one day to a whole week of activities across the two campuses worked extremely well. Cardiff Met has such a diverse student body, so providing opportunities to explore the different cultures that are represented at the University is very important.
‘It was fantastic to see so many students and staff participating and the feedback I have received since, particularly about the atmosphere that the Global Village created, has been very positive.”
