Cardiff Met Tennis Team Triumphs And Retains National Premier League Tennis Title
Four Cardiff Metropolitan University tennis players are celebrating after triumphing at this year’s National Premier League Tennis event in Leeds for the second year in a row.
The team included Cardiff Met tennis coach and team captain, Chris Lewis; professional players, Josh Milton (who is ranked 345 in the world); Marcus Willis (who is ranked World 545th) and Neath-based tennis coach and former Top 50 junior professional, Craig Evans.
Throughout the event, the team were top seeds and won through to the final after beating David Lloyd Leeds’ team 3-1 in the quarter-finals, followed by a 3-1 semi-finals win against Edgbaston Priory’s team, which included Dan Evans, one half of the winning GB Team at last year’s Davis Cup.
The Final round of the tennis event saw the team go up against Millfield School, who were captained by former Cardiff Met student, Mathew James. This was a close match which almost went to tie but Cardiff Met team came out on top, with a final score of 3-1.
The team has now qualified for the 2017 National Premier League Tennis event and are gearing up to defend their title.
Speaking about the win, Chris said: “Winning the National Premier League Tennis event for the second year in a row is a fantastic achievement. The team did an amazing job, each one of them showed great determination and played really strongly throughout the National Premier League.
“We are all looking forward to coming back next year and defending our title again. We have a strong team and I am confident that we can win the event for the third year.”
The National Premier League Tennis event is a doubles only event and is the only domestic club event to run through the winter season. More than 100 teams around the UK take part and compete in regional divisions to qualify for the finals.
