Cardiff Met Welcomes Singapore Staff
Staff from the University’s School of Education have hosted a group of Singaporean teachers to help support their development of the teaching of Physical Education.
Six Singaporean PE teachers took part in the week long project at Cardiff Met’s Cyncoed campus to gain an insight into how PE is taught in Wales in order to identify aspects of good practice to inform their teaching.
The visit was organised as part of the Physical Education and Sports Teacher Academy (PESTA) Project, established by the Singapore Ministry of Education and which aims to develop the provision of PE in Singaporean schools.
Dr Sue Capel, a former Cardiff Met student, now Professor of Physical Education at Brunel University, is currently working as a consultant with PESTA to develop the mentoring aspect of teacher training and liaised with Cardiff Met to host the project. After last week’s successful visit, the project team is now looking to develop assessment strategies to support Singapore’s pupils and teachers in their PE development.
This is the first time Cardiff Met has been involved with the Singapore Government through their PESTA project, and as a result the University hopes to develop further links to further extend their collaboration on the sharing of best practice.
Sally Bethell, programme director of PGCE Secondary Training at Cardiff Met, said: “We are delighted to be able to provide support for the PESTA project and help give Singaporean teachers an insight into how we teach PE in South Wales.
“The project is a great learning tool for everyone involved as both sides can share knowledge and improve their own practices. It is an important step in sharing best practice and we are pleased to have been involved.
“Dr Capel has been involved with collaborative projects with the University for a number of years and we are delighted that she considered us the best providers to host the project.”
