International Association For The Philosophy Of Sport Honours Cardiff Met Academic

A senior member of Cardiff School of Sport’s academic team has been recognised at an international level for his work in the philosophy of sport. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Dr Alun Hardman, who is the School’s Associate Dean (International) was recently presented with the International Association for the Philosophy of Sport’s (IAPS) 2016 distinguished service award for his outstanding contribution to the discipline. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Dr Hardman, who has been an active member of the association since 1988, was presented with this accolade at the IAPS’ 44th annual meeting at the International Olympic Academy, Olympia, Greece. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

His research supports the longstanding and widely-recognised contribution made by the School of Sport to the area of the philosophy and ethics of sport. Dr Hardman, who is the current Chair of the British Philosophy of Sport Association, also has a research profile in this area that encompasses a range of contemporary ethical issues. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Established in 1972, the IAPS is committed to encourage and promote research, scholarship and teaching in the philosophy of sport and related practices. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Dr Hardman commented: “I am absolutely delighted to have been recognised by the International Association for the Philosophy of Sport and would like to thank them for recognising my contribution and making sports philosophy so vibrant and relevant to academics across the globe. I now look forward to continuing my work and research on this international stage.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Dean of Cardiff School of Sport, Professor Richard Tong added: “Alun’s accolade reinforces Cardiff School of Sport’s role as a world leader in the philosophy of sport over the past few decades. On behalf of the entire staff and student body here, I would like to congratulate Alun on this incredible achievement.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
