Liminal Encounters: A Pop-Up Symposium Hosted By Cardiff School Of Art And Design

How can our liminal capacities as ‘visual thinkers’ be directed to influence change? Can we perceive the boundaries of thought? If the liminal can be held in technique, is it still liminal?
In his latest book Liminal Thinking, keynote David W Gray (founder of XPLANE, author of Gamestorming and The Connected Company) considers visual ways to create organisational change by understanding, shaping, and reframing beliefs.
Richard Parry (Coleridge in Wales 2016) suggests this territory is not at heart defined by techniques, but by our capacities for relationship and for image and word in conversation.
This one-day event (Saturday 23rd April 2016) examines instrumental and intuitive approaches to changing beliefs: discussion, visual modelling, 3D mapping, and walking in conversation. Can such approaches help pragmatic institutions embrace greater creative flexibility and imagination? To what extent does business psychology make cultic holdings on the territory of core open capacities? Are not-knowing and ignorance our greatest assets?

Speakers:
David W Gray
Founder of XPLANE, a strategic design consultancy, and co-founder of Boardthing, a collaboration platform for distributed teams. He is the author of two books on design, change and innovation: Gamestorming: A playbook for innovators, rule-breakers and changemakers; and The Connected Company.
His area of focus is the human side of change and innovation, specifically: How can you get people to adopt new ideas? How can you win their hearts and minds? How can you get people, including yourself, to change deeply embedded habits and behaviours? How can you transform a business strategy from a good idea to a living fact in the real world?
Chris Glynn
Senior Lecturer in Illustration at Cardiff School of Art and Design. Chris set up and led the BA Hons Illustration at CSAD 2007-14 and co-founded the Illustration Research network in 2010. He previously worked as a designer for animation companies in the UK and Europe and taught animation internationally. Chris co-founded Illustration Research in 2010. The focus of his work is visualising complex human situations through humour, and promoting collaboration between illustration and other disciplines from music and theatre to health medicine and organisational development. Since 2014, Chris has accompanied Richard Parry in a series of musical antemasque performances and conference interventions.
Richard Parry
Richard graduated from the University of Sheffield in 1985 with a degree in music. He went to work as an actor and writer in theatre & TV, winning ‘Time Out’, Edinburgh festival and London Theatre awards. He studied classical singing with Mark Wildman and has performed with British opera companies, in concert and pioneered a fusion between classical art songs and drama. He is committed to education, encouraging young musicians in schools, widening access to high quality music and releasing voice. He has been involved in setting up numerous festivals and is Director of Coleridge in Wales 2016.
Specialising in Leadership Development and organisational culture change Richard wrote and delivered Royal Mail’s keynote presentation to the World Congress for Total Quality Management, and designed coaching-based induction training for Royal Mail. His work as a facilitator and change management teacher is founded the work of Carl Rogers. Richard has combined his singing and extensive team development experience to create the highly popular choral challenge at work,The Big Sing, for clients including DRP Group and Lloyds TSB.
Mike Parker
Nearly being expelled from school for hypnotising his classmates in the lunch hour did nothing to deter a fascination with hypnosis and altered states of consciousness. Mike’s 40-year-learning path has taken him through different schools of thinking around psychology and psychoanalysis, and an investigation of esoteric traditions is now informed by neuroscience and an interest in metaphor. His practice High End Hypnotherapy supports people’s capacities to heal themselves. He is a practitioner of Solutions Focused Hypnotherapy with a diploma from the acclaimed Clifton Practice in Bristol.
