School Pupils Get Creative With Clay At Cardiff Met

Cardiff Metropolitan University recently welcomed local school pupils to a workshop aimed at encouraging the students to get creative with clay while helping them develop their confidence by experience something new. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Held at the Cardiff School of Art and Design (CSAD) at the University’s Llandaff campus on Tuesday (March 15), the event saw 16 participants from Brynmawr Comprehensive School engage in a one day workshop where they got the chance to create their very own masterpieces, with expert help along the way from the University’s staff and students, participatory artists from Artworks Cymru including Penny Turnbull, youth support worker Emma Drew and Bethan Lewis from Head4Arts. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The pupils were also treated to a tour of the state-of-the-art campus which was officially opened in 2015 and houses over 1,250 staff and students, with disciplines ranging from Fine Art to Textiles and Product Design. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Dr Natasha Mayo, Subject Leader for Ceramics at the University said: “The benefits of the visit were two fold. It introduced Brynmawr’s pupils to a range of ceramics skills and process including traditional throwing, working with combustible materials and sculpture and cob building and showed them that they could aspire to studying at University. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“The visit also gave our own students the chance to develop and test their own workshops teaching skills and gave them another opportunity to work with some wonderful visiting artists organised by Artworks Cymru.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
