Tourism Taster for Welsh Medium Students
Welsh medium school children from across south east Wales were recently given a taste of studying tourism and hospitality at university.
Pupils from Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni, Ysgol Gyfun Gwynllyw, Ysgol Plasmawr, Coleg y Cymoedd and Bridgend College took part in a learner conference at the Urdd Centre, Cardiff Bay.
The event, which was run by Cardiff Met as part of a cross-border forum of Welsh medium schools and colleges, saw 50 students take part in a tourism and hospitality lecture and get a behind the scenes look at the Urdd Centre, the Senedd and the Millennium Centre. The tours focused on how the organisations provide different services and activities for a wide range of tourism customer.
Business and Management Lecturer at Cardiff Met, Kelly Young said:
“The number of Welsh medium students in Hospitality, Tourism and Event Management is increasing year-on-year with more students coming to us to take a part of their course in Welsh.
“Our first cohort of Welsh medium programme students graduated last year and this academic year, we have seen the highest number of learners enrolling on the Welsh medium modules in the Cardiff School of Management.
“We believe this success is because of activities such as this learner conference and our partnership work with schools across south east Wales.
“There is a high demand for Welsh speakers in the tourism, hospitality and events management industries in Wales and we will continue to look at ways of running events that share and explain the opportunities available in higher education.”
