Cardiff University Has Retained The Varsity Shield For A Record 15th Consecutive Year
Welsh Varsity is the biggest annual student sporting event in Wales and a highlight in the academic calendar for Cardiff and Swansea universities.
Students from Cardiff and Swansea competed in over 35 competitions across a range of sports from archery to Tae Kwon Do, with Cardiff securing another comfortable shield win, with the final score at 25-12.
The celebrations culminated in the men’s rugby at Swansea’s Liberty Stadium. Despite leading at half-time, Cardiff couldn’t hold on to the lead, with Swansea making a late comeback, taking the final score to 16-10.
Stuart Vanstone, Head of Sport, said: “It was great to see so many students competing across a range of sports, with some fantastic performances.
“To win the Varsity shield for a 15th consecutive year is a great achievement, and demonstrates our strong tradition of sporting excellence.
“Our supporters provided a great atmosphere and were in full voice cheering for Team Cardiff.”
The annual competition between Cardiff and Swansea began as a rugby match in 1997 and has grown into the second biggest varsity competition in the UK (only behind Oxford and Cambridge).
Over 10,000 Cardiff players and supporters travelled to Swansea to participate in the day’s events.
