Deputy Vice-Chancellor To Head Aberystwyth

Professor Elizabeth Treasure has been appointed Vice-Chancellor of Aberystwyth University. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Currently Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Treasure is expected to take up her new post in April 2017. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The Vice-Chancellor has led congratulations to Professor Treasure following news of her appointment, and praised her “outstanding” contribution to the University over the last 21 years. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Colin Riordan said: “Elizabeth has been my Deputy since I arrived in 2012. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“She has done an outstanding job and contributed in no small measure to the current successes of the University…” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“She knows and understands the sector well, is very familiar with the Welsh context and is highly experienced in terms of institutional leadership and management. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“I am sure I speak for colleagues from across the University when I wish her every success in her new role. As a University, we owe Elizabeth a debt of gratitude.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Professor Treasure became the University’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor in 2010 with responsibility for key areas including projects in strategic planning, resources and sustainable development as well as staffing and estates. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

During her time in office she oversaw the handover to the new Vice-Chancellor and the establishment of the University’s new College structure; devised the University’s first Estates Masterplan resulting in two major new research buildings with many more in the pipeline; acted as a champion for equality and diversity and; established Project Search which provides employment and learning opportunities for young people with disabilities. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Before becoming Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Treasure was a Senior Lecturer and Consultant in Dental Public Health at the then University of Wales College of Medicine, achieving promotion to Professor in 2000 and Dean and General Manager at the Dental School and Hospital in 2006. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

During her time at the School of Dentistry she was instrumental in a series of national and international dental research epidemiological studies as well as leading systematic reviews on water fluoridation and longevity of dental restorations. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

She also developed a new academic and financial restructure for the School of Dentistry and ensured the development of a high-tech floor of cutting edge teaching facilities and laboratories as well as giving the go-ahead for the University’s flagship Mountain Ash Community dental training facility. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The current Head of the School of Dentistry, Professor Michael Lewis said: “Professor Elizabeth Treasure was the Dean of the School of Dentistry and the Head of the NHS Dental Service Group between 2006 and 2010. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“During her tenure, Professor Treasure made a significant contribution to the School, restructuring the School’s historic departmental structure into research themes and leading a capital programme for a new dedicated research floor in the University Dental Hospital. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“These changes have enabled the School to thrive in recent years, resulting in the School’s position as the number one Dental School in the UK for both education provision and research…” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
