World-Renowned Journalist To Deliver Hadyn Ellis Lecture
BBC World Affairs Editor, John Simpson, one of the World’s most experienced and well-known journalists, will share his life as a foreign correspondent in Cardiff University’s high profile Hadyn Ellis lecture.
Taking place on Thursday 24th November 2016, the lecture ‘We Chose to Speak of War and Strife: The World of the Foreign Correspondent’ – will focus on pivotal moments in our history – from the Crimean War to Vietnam; the siege of Sarajevo to the fall of Baghdad – through the eyes of those who risked life and limb to witness them first hand, and the astonishing tales of what it took to report them.
In a BBC career spanning 50 years, John has reported from more than 100 countries across the globe, from 30 war zones and has interviewed numerous controversial world leaders including Sadam Hussein, Osama Bin Laden, Nelson Mandela, Margaret Thatcher, Mikhail Gorbachev, Yasser Arafat, Colonel Gadhaffi, Ayatollah Khomeini, Robert Mugabe and the Emperor Bokassa.
In his lecture he will weave the tales of the greats of yesterday and today, such as Martha Gellhorn, Ernest Hemingway, Don McCullin and Marie Colvin, with extraordinary accounts from his own lifetime on the frontlines, to give a personal insight into the life of a foreign correspondent.
The Hadyn Ellis Distinguished Lecture Series was established in memory of Professor Hadyn Ellis CBE, who made a significant contribution towards establishing the discipline of cognitive neuropsychiatry and was instrumental in establishing Cardiff as one of the leading research universities in the UK. It brings speakers of international distinction to Cardiff University to deliver prestigious public lectures.
We Chose to Speak of War and Strife: The World of the Foreign Correspondent takes place in the Julian Hodge lecture theatre and starts at 18:30. The event is free and open to all but tickets must be reserved here.
