Carmarthen Made A Colourful Splash For Shwmae Shwmae
County Hall in Carmarthen made a colourful splash for Shwmae Su’mae this year.
The night before Diwrnod Shwmae Day a colourful image of the Welsh language initiative was thrown across one of the towers of County Hall.
It was organised by Carmarthen Town Council with the co-operation of the County Council. The image was created by Swci Delic (the designer Mared Lenny) from Carmarthen.
Thousands of individuals, schools and societies of all kinds from across Carmarthenshire and the whole of Wales took part in Diwrnod Shwmae Day on Saturday when people were encouraged to greet each other with ‘Shwmae?’ to promote the Welsh language.
Executive board member for the Welsh Language, Cllr Mair Stephens said: “Shwmae Su’mae Day was a great opportunity to promote the Welsh language and I’d like to congratulate people for taking part. I hope people will continue their efforts and feel confident to use the language.
“Remember, there are Welsh lessons on every level available on our website. Don’t worry if the courses have already started you can join the group after a few weeks.”
To mark the occasion in Carmarthen, there was a quiz in Welsh in Carmarthen Football club on Saturday for learners as well as Welsh speakers.
In Carmarthenshire the aim is for every child to have the opportunity to leave school and be fluent in Welsh and English.
More and more employers across the county and in Wales as a whole are keen to recruit staff able to work comfortably in both languages.
The county has a successful Welsh for Adults programme to encourage those who wish to speak the language or to better their skills.
