Children’s Festive Designs Will Light Up Town
Schoolgirls Lia Davies and Lucy Johnson will see their winning festive designs lighting up Llanelli town centre.
Every year – as part of the Christmas celebrations – a competition is held in local primary schools to design Christmas lights.
Lucy, aged seven, from Ysgol Y Felin, won the infants category with her Christmas Angel, and Lia, from Ysgol Ffwrnes, wrapped up the junior category with her Christmas present design.
The competition was held back in the summer, and the winners chosen, so there was enough time for the lights to be manufactured.
The pair were invited along to see the lights going up as part of the festive decorations throughout the town centre.
Lucy’s mum Clare said: “She has been super excited about it. Ever since she heard she had won, she hasn’t stopped talking about it.”
Both girls will also be invited onto the main stage in Spring Gardens on carnival night – Friday, November, 18 – to help switch on the lights with Heart FM’s Jason Harrold and the town’s civic dignitaries.
The carnival is organised by Carmarthenshire County Council, Llanelli Rural Council, Llanelli Town Council and Llanelli Round Table; supported by Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water.
The schools competition has been held for the last 13 years, and previous winners’ lights continue to be used year after year.
Cllr Meryl Gravell, the council’s executive board member for regeneration and leisure, said: “I would like to congratulate both the winners and look forward to seeing the lights displayed in all their glory after the big switch-on.
“We are building up quite a collection of Christmas lights, thanks to the efforts of our local schoolchildren; we really do have some talented children in the county.
“Carnival night is one of the highlights of the year, attracting thousands of people from all over, and one of the best in Wales.”
