Heol Goffa School Is Special In Many Ways

It may be one of the smaller units in Carmarthenshire County’s scheme of schools but Ysgol Heol Goffa is special in more ways than one. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Carmarthenshire County Council executive board member for education, Cllr Gareth Jones, on meeting the school staff and many of its 75 pupils in a classroom and concert setting, said it has been a ‘profoundly enriching experience’.
Cllr Jones toured the school with head teacher Nikki Symmons, addressed pupils and staff at a special assembly and met the school’s chair of governor’s Owain Jenkins. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Cllr Jones also met two of the schools pupils, Ruth and Tyler Charleston, 17-year-old twins, days before they left as the only Welsh representatives competing this month (March) at the World Winter Special Olympics in Schladalming, Austria. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Cllr Jones also belated presented Tyler Charleston with her trophy as Carmarthenshire Disability Sports Woman of the Year in the Carmarthenshire council Sports Personality Awards. Tyler had been in Austria training with the Special Olympics squad in February when the awards were taken place. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Cllr Jones said: “Heol Goffa has an astonishing record of helping pupils past and present aspire to great heights because of the opportunities the school challenges its pupils undertake. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
