Makeover For Cwmaman Pool Thanks To Next Steps

Cwmaman paddling pool is getting a much-needed makeover from the Next Steps candidates. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

TRJ Ltd agreed to carry out the work as part of the Next Steps project to bring the pool up to standard for the benefit of the local community. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Cwmaman Town Council is delighted that the pool – which is around 80 years old – will be transformed for residents to enjoy once again. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Ten candidates have been chosen to take part in the Next Steps competition to win full-time paid construction apprenticeships with local building firms TRJ Ltd as well as Lloyd & Gravell Ltd. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

They are working alongside skilled tradesmen to learn basic skills including carpentry, bricklaying, plastering and ground works. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Two community projects have been chosen – Cwmaman pool and creating an outdoor area at Llys Y Bryn care home in Llanelli. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The pool was in a bad state and works have included sealing and replastering the lining. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Cwmaman Mayor Kevin Madge said the pool would be open before the end of the summer: “We are delighted that TRJ were willing to help us so that the pool can be reopened. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“The candidates have been working hard and have made lots of progress very quickly. It is a tremendous facility and we are very thankful.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The town council is also looking at putting in splash pads at the park to complement the refurbished paddling pool. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Director of TRJ Ltd Owain Jones said: “We are very pleased to be able to help Cwmaman Town Council; the pool is an excellent community facility and we are looking forward to seeing people using it again. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“As well as providing apprenticeship opportunities, Next Steps is about giving back to the community.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Next Steps is a joint initiative between the two building firms and Constructing Carmarthenshire Together – a partnership between Carmarthenshire County Council’s Property division, Coleg Sir Gâr, and Carmarthenshire Construction Training Association Ltd. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Executive Board Member for the Environment Cllr Hazel Evans said: “It is great to see communities benefitting from Next Steps.
