New Armed Forces Champion For Carmarthenshire

Councillor David Jenkins is the new Armed Forces Champion for Carmarthenshire. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Cllr Jenkins will chair the county steering group which meets quarterly, and will also represent Carmarthenshire at certain events. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The steering group was set up to provide easy access to support and entitlements any member of the armed forces, either regular or reserve, a veteran, family member, widow or widower needs. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

All members of the group have signed up to the Community Covenant, which is a commitment to support the Armed Forces community working and living in Carmarthenshire. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The steering group is made up of representatives from major organisations in the county, with the aims of improving the sharing and recording of information; providing direction and approval for community grant bids; communicating the work of the Community Covenant, and providing information on how to access support. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Cllr Jenkins has taken over the role from Cllr Kevin Madge who resigned from the post earlier this year. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

As Armed Forces Champion, Cllr Jenkins will also contribute to the work of the group and help drive forward initiatives to support past and present members of the Armed Forces, and their families. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

He said: “I am honoured and humbled to become Carmarthenshire’s Armed Forces Champion. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“This is about a commitment by all organisations which have signed the pledge to provide the right support at the right time for all members of the Armed Forces, past or present, and to recognise and remember the sacrifices they have made.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
