New Traffic Calming Measures Reduce Speeding
NEW traffic calming measures have helped to reduce the speed of vehicles along an Amman Valley road.
Speed cushions were installed along a section of the A474 in Garnant following complaints from residents about the speed of traffic and concerns someone was going to get seriously injured.
In particular, local member Cllr Kevin Madge was concerned about the high speeds approaching a mini-roundabout and bus stop along the route.
The scheme was implemented earlier this year, with further works recently carried out after reports that motorists were mounting the pavement to avoid the speed cushions. Bollards have now been installed to prevent drivers from taking this action.
Figures show that average speeds have reduced to between 19mph – 22mph.
Executive Board Member for the Environment Cllr Hazel Evans said: “It was important that action was taken along this route to reduce the speed of vehicles.
“Cllr Madge brought his concerns to us following complaints from residents and I am pleased to say that figures are showing a reduction in speed.
“Speeding has a major impact on communities and the safety of our children.”
The council is monitoring air quality and noise levels in the area following the installation of the traffic calming scheme at the request of Cllr Madge and residents living nearby.
Cllr Madge added: “My priority has always been road safety and the safety of the public in general. I appreciate that sometimes these types of schemes can be an inconvenience to some, but the reduction in speeding is welcomed, the aim was to slow people down and the figures show that the speed has dramatically reduced.”
