Palm Oil Advice For Dog Walkers

Rangers at Pembrey’s Cefn Sidan beach are urging dog walkers to be careful following reports of palm oil washing up on the Welsh coast. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Although no traces of palm oil have been seen at Cefn Sidan, rangers are advising caution as the substance can be harmful to pets. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

They are monitoring the coastline after reports of the yellow or white waxy oil deposits washing up at a Pembrokeshire beach. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

They are also asking dog walkers to keep their eyes peeled and report any sightings to rangers. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Cefn Sidan is part of Pembrey Country Park, a Carmarthenshire County Council facility. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Cllr Meryl Gravell, Executive Board Member for leisure, said: “Whilst we have not had any reports or sightings of palm oil, it is possible that we could see some deposits wash up on the shoreline, as it has in neighbouring Pembrokeshire. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“Our rangers continue to check the beach, but as Cefn Sidan is eight miles long there is a chance that some deposits may go unnoticed. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“Palm oil is not harmful to humans, but can be fatal if ingested by dogs. All we ask is that dog walkers exercise caution and report anything of concern to our rangers. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“If anyone suspects their dog may have eaten palm oil, they should seek veterinary assistance as soon as possible.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
