Park Event Attracts More Than 1,000 Athletes
Over 1,000 athletes turned out to compete in a cross country match at Pembrey Country Park.
Hundreds of spectators from across Wales and the South of England descended on the park to see competitors negotiate a challenging course in the Gwent League’s race.
Athletes from aged 9 to 80 tackled fast grass sections, sand dunes, woods and paths winning praise from those cheering on the side lines.
Carmarthen Harriers played host to the final match of the season which saw some 10 races held throughout the day.
Marshals for the event were Sospan Road Runners and St John Ambulance were on hand to administer first aid. Support was also provided from Dyfed Powys Police and Gegin Fach y Wlad.
The council’s executive board member for leisure, Cllr Meryl Gravell said: “More and more sporting organisations are attracted to holding events at the park. It just goes to show the diversity of the park and beach is almost endless and is the perfect venue for many different types of events. It also provides the perfect opportunity to showcase what the park has to offer as a tourist destination.”
It is hoped the success of the event will attract future national and international events.
