Residents Snap Up Half Price Compost Bins

Residents in Carmarthenshire have taken advantage of a one day half price compost bin sale. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

More than 100 bins were sold for just £6 by the council’s waste and recycling section at the Co-op car park in Cross Hands. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The event was held to mark Compost Awareness Week. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Vegetable peelings, fruit scraps, tea bags and egg shells can all be composted at home along with grass cuttings, flowers, leaves and hedge clippings. Untreated sawdust, small amounts of cardboard, paper towels, waste paper and wood ash can also be added to bins and heaps. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

As well as reducing the amount of waste that is buried in landfill sites, it produces rich plant food that can be recycled back into the soil. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Executive Board Member for the Environment Cllr Hazel Evans said: “Many people don’t realise just how easy it is to home compost or just how much of their household waste can actually be composted.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

For those who couldn’t make it on the day, compost bins can be purchased from the council for £12 including delivery. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
