Statutory Notice To Be Published For Llangennech School

A statutory notice is to be published for proposed changes regarding Llangennech schools. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Carmarthenshire’s executive board today approved the move to publish the notice with the plans to amalgamate the junior and infant schools; extend the age range to three to 11 for nursery provision; and to change the language category from dual stream to Welsh medium. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The proposed language change has generated debate amongst parents and the community, with many representatives attending the meeting to question education executive board member Cllr Gareth Jones. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The debate, which lasted almost three hours, was followed by a discussion of the executive board when they determined that the notice would be the next step. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

A final decision on the proposals will be taken by County Council following completion of the notice period, which will include further opportunities for parents, staff and the community to comment on the proposals before any decisions are taken by council. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The notice is expected to be published in the first week of September and the period for representations will last for 28 days. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The findings will inform a report to go before the council when it meets to conclude the matter later this administrative year. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Cllr Jones said: “I have listened to the views of all those for and against these proposals, and I respect the opinions of both. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“As an executive board, we feel that the next step should be the statutory notice which is a formal process and will help inform the decision of council when it meets to determine this matter.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
