Work Progressing Well On Carmarthen West Link Road

Work is progressing well on the £5 million Carmarthen West Link Road. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The road, which will connect the A40 at Travellers Rest with College Road in Johnstown, is currently under construction by Alun Griffiths (Contractors) Ltd, for the council. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

It will improve access to key employment sites at St David’s Park, the University of Wales Trinity St David and Coleg Sir Gâr, and serve the new S4C headquarters whose plans were unveiled at last week’s Eisteddfod; as well as open up land for new homes and a primary school. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

A major milestone is the installation of a new Bebo arch bridge over the Tawelan Brook. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The bridge is made up of a total of 22 units each weighing 17.3 tonnes; and each of the units were paired up to make 11 arch segments. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The construction of the bridge saw two cranes working in tandem – and it was all caught on camera. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Council Leader Emlyn Dole, Executive Board Member for Transport Cllr Hazel Evans and Environment Director Ruth Mullen also went along to see the first units being installed as well as the general progress being made on site. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Cllr Dole said: “It was very impressive to see the bridge being constructed. Work on the road is well underway and is really taking shape.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Works are now focusing at the College Road end of the scheme to complete the new junction so that the temporary traffic lights can be removed. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Sectional completion of phase one of the works is programmed to finish at the end of September. The remaining phases of works will be programmed to ensure the road is open in time for the new S4C headquarters. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The council has received a £1.3 million grant from Welsh Government towards construction of the road, with further support from University of Wales Trinity Saint David. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Cllr Evans said: “This is a very exciting and much-needed development for Carmarthen providing a significant economic boost to the area with numerous community benefits such as employment, recruitment and training; and educational opportunities for local schools. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“It was great to see the progress made on site and the installation of the bridge marks a key stage of the project.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
