Beach lovers can enjoy all the fun of the seaside this summer in landlocked Merthyr Tydfil. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Friday 19 and Saturday 20 August will see Penderyn Square in the town centre transformed into a sandy beach surrounded by colourful deckchairs and beach huts. There will be an ample supply of buckets and spades on hand so sandcastles will be the order of the day alongside traditional seaside fare including ice cream and special Merthyr rock. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

The event is organised by The Big Heart of Merthyr Tydfil Business Improvement District and forms part of an exciting programme of monthly festivals and events in the town centre through the summer. Additional attractions will include face painting with the Heart Angels, street theatre and steel pan music, street food and fairground rides. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

The beach will be open from 1pm to 7pm on the Friday and 10am to 5pm on the Saturday and entry is free although charges will apply for the fairground rides. Les Byard, Chair of The Big Heart of Merthyr Tydfil said, “The beach was very popular last year in spite of some unseasonal weather so we are delighted to host the event again this year. We have lots of fun activities lined up and families are guaranteed a great day out. I hope to see some spectacular sandcastles and, although the waves won’t actually be crashing on the sand, there will be the sounds of the sea and seagulls to help provide the full beach experience.” ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌
