Traders Offered Free Merthyr Tydfil Market Stall Opportunity
Local suppliers are being offered the chance to test-trade in Merthyr Tydfil as part of a national annual celebration of street markets.
Love Your Local Market Week from May 17-31 will see five local traders offered a stall free of charge at the street markets in High Street and Market Square.
“The aim is to help traders without commercial premises dip their toe in selling on the high street,” said Town Centre Manager Rhian Prosser. “They might be selling online, from their home – or not even selling at all yet.
“The test-trade means they’ll be able to research demand for their product, get customer feedback, hone their selling skills – and hopefully make some money as part of the experience,” she added.
“We’re proud of the number and quality of markets that we have here, and we’re especially interested in expanding what they offer shoppers.”
The initiative is being run in partnership with the Effect (Enterprise Facilitation for Effective Community Transformation) programme of support for local entrepreneurs, and there are five opportunities available at each one of the markets on Tuesdays and Saturdays during the fortnight-long campaign.
“We want to hear potential traders’ ideas for a stall,” said Rhian. “All they have to do is contact the Effect programme with their pitch – it could be a tweet, video, Facebook post, or even on the back of a postcard.
“Markets are a vital part of our town centre. The Love Your Local Market campaign celebrates the uniqueness of markets, and we’re hoping the experience will encourage the new traders to stay.”
Anyone who would like to try test-trading is asked to contact Jared Green on 07730 283812, email jared.green@merthyr.gov.uk, via the Effect Merthyr Tydfil Facebook page or by tweeting @MtEffect.
