Free Tours Now Available At Historic Margam Park

Visitors to Margam Country Park now have access to much more of its historic buildings than ever before, thanks to a successful recruitment drive for volunteers. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The additional help means that there are now knowledgeable, enthusiastic people on hand to accompany visitors to previously out of bounds areas. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

A series of new, free tours of the historic castle and 18th Century Orangery have been introduced to enhance the visitor experience. Whilst many of the castle’s internal features were lost during the fire of 1977, visitors can now enjoy the stunning views from the upstairs rooms and walk in the footsteps of the Talbot family. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

There are regular tours throughout the week and on weekends with a special tour targeted at families. The “Find Morgan the Margam Monk” tour has already proved successful with children and adults, with a certificate awarded at the end of each successful search. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The costume tours feature guides in the character and costumes of the castle butler, a World War II soldier, a policeman and William Henry Fox Talbot – who commissioned the Tudor Gothic mansion in the 1830s. The tours include access to the drawing room, library and the upstairs Tapestry and Chinese bedrooms and feature pictures of the rooms as they might have looked during the times of the Talbot’s. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The Park staff are still keen to hear from anyone interested in becoming a volunteer, not only to join its team of historic tour guides, but also as a gardening volunteer. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
