Poor Parking at Primary School Poses Risk to Pedestrians, Councillor Warns
POOR parking at a primary school is posing a risk to children and other pedestrians, a councillor has said.
Maria Stevens asked if enforcement can be stepped up at Durand Primary on the junction of Alianore Road and the B4245 Caldicot bypass.
The Labour councillor for the town’s Severn Ward said: “We have parking on the pavement and it is causing an obstruction to parents with children, wheelchair users or people with buggies.
“It is a concern as it is on a bend and it is really, really difficult if drivers or passengers are getting in and out of cars opening doors. I’ve seen parents with small children having to walk around the bend and into the road.”
Cllr Stevens raised the issue when Monmouthshire County Council’s place scrutiny committee examined the authority’s draft road safety strategy that aims to reduce the numbers killed or seriously injured on the county’s roads by a minimum of 40 per cent between now and 2040.
Council road safety officer Geraint Roberts said he could ask enforcement officers to put Durand Primary on their route but cautioned following periods of enforcement drivers will often revert to poor behaviour when they realise action is no longer taking place.
