Celebrating Chartism event on Saturday 5 March
An event celebrating the legacy of Chartism is being held across three locations in Newport city centre on Saturday 5 March.
The Celebrating Chartism Light and Sound event takes place in Westgate Square, John Frost Square and outside the Riverfront Theatre and Arts Centre from 4pm to 7pm.
It will feature dance, drama, music and storytelling performances along the route, culminating in large projections and music at about 6.30pm.
One of the performers in this outdoor display is 14-year-old Megan Holborn who attends The Riverfront’s Connections drama project, and who got involved with the Celebrating Chartism event as she felt passionate about role of young people in the community and the impact that the city has had on shaping democracy.
She devised her own dance movements and will be dressed in a beautiful bird costume. Her dance will form part of the projections shown at the event.
Everyone can take part in lantern making from 3pm and join the story route from 4pm in Westgate Square, including the tale story of Chartist Jack at 4.30pm.
Full details of the programme will be available at www.newportlive.co.uk
