Neath Port Talbot Council Unveils £3m Plan to Enhance Leisure Centre Facilities

Neath Port Talbot council has announced plans for a £3m programme of works to improve leisure centre facilities across the county borough.
The project will see a total investment of £3.3m made towards new fitness facilities, specialist wellbeing spaces, padel courts, and other gym upgrades in the coming months.
A council spokesman said the “ambitious programme” would aim to modernise local leisure centres as well as expand activities and improve health and wellbeing opportunities.
The work will be taken forward in partnership between the council and Celtic Leisure who deliver leisure and cultural services on their behalf.
In Aberavon the leisure centre is expected to receive a sum of £708,000 to develop a new reformer pilates studio along with plans to extend the gym by developing part of the sports hall viewing gallery.
In Neath Sports Centre plans to create two new padel courts on currently unused tennis courts could go ahead if planning permission is approved.
Celtic Leisure say they are also planning to to invest around £150,000 from their own reserves to upgrade the Neath gym with new equipment and modernised facilities.
Additionally Pontardawe Leisure Centre could undergo a “significant transformation” with a proposed £2.1m redevelopment at the site.
Works here could see a a new gym positioned at the front of the building along with additional fitness studio space that is “designed around emerging fitness trends and customer demand”.
However there was no mention of plans to build a new swimming pool for the town despite a feasibility study which named the existing Pontardawe Leisure Centre as its preferred site for a new pool following the closure of the old one in 2024.
Elsewhere the report said that early stages of plans were being developed to upgrade gym facilities at the Vale of Neath Leisure Centre in Glynneath.
Councillor Cen Phillips, cabinet member for nature, tourism and wellbeing, said: “”This investment programme demonstrates our commitment to providing high-quality leisure facilities for communities across Neath Port Talbot.
“From innovative fitness spaces at Aberavon to exciting new sports opportunities in Neath and major improvements in Pontardawe these projects will help more people become active, improve their wellbeing, and enjoy modern facilities close to home.” ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌
