Leader Expresses Concern For Steel Industry

Newport has always been very proud of its steel industry which made an important contribution to its growth and prosperity over the decades. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Despite the downturn in recent years, Tata remains a major employer in the city with hundreds of people working at both Llanwern and the Orb Works. As a nation, we need to have a strong manufacturing base and the steel industry in Newport and South Wales should continue to make a vital contribution to our economy both locally and nationally. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

As a council, we are 100 per cent behind the employees and we understand this uncertainty over the future must be extremely difficult for them and their families. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

We will continue to monitor the developing situation and do whatever we can to support the campaign to save the steel industry. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
