Planning Application For Residential Gypsy And Traveller Site
Newport City Council has submitted a planning application for a residential Gypsy and Traveller site to meet the accommodation needs of local families.
The site in Hartridge Farm Road is specifically intended for local families who have lived in the city for a number of years on unauthorised and/or unsuitable sites. They are part of the existing Newport community.
Submitting the planning application is a required legal process. However, if permission is granted then funding may be sought towards the costs of establishing a site from the Welsh Government.
Newport City Council had to identify a residential site in its Local Development Plan which, following a detailed examination by an independent inspector, was adopted by the full council last year.
In his report, the inspector found the allocation was sound and he supported the approach taken by the council’s cross party scrutiny committee to identify a suitable location.
He said there was a clear and demonstrable need for the plan to make provision for the local families concerned and the Hartridge Farm Road site would meet this need in full.
The application is due to be considered by a future meeting of the planning committee.
