Walk The Port And Take The Skyline Challenge
Discover the hidden delights of Newport by taking part in a Walk the Port event, sponsored by Newport city council and a host of partners.
The council is also offering walkers the chance to do regular Newport Skyline Challenge events which offer walkers a variety of routes over several distances.
The shorter walks are usually suitable for families with younger children and range in distance from one mile to a five mile led walks or for those looking to go even further there are two more led walks of nine or 16 miles.
All routes start and end at the Active Living Centre, Bettws and provide stunning surroundings that let you enjoy Newport’s varied countryside. The Skyline Challenge started this week (1 June) and continues until 19 August.
For all routes you should wear sensible walking shoes and appropriate clothing including wet-weather gear just in case.
On the longer routes you should be prepared for walking across fields, stiles, off-road tracks, through forestry and up some very big hills!
Water will be available at checkpoint on the routes but make sure you have your own supply as well as some fruit and healthy snacks.
It is important that walkers choose a route that is suitable for their own personal level of fitness. Shorter routes do not mean easy walking / running.
Once you book up for a challenge a descriptive route card will be sent out (digitally) with your information pack giving grid references for key points or features, the type of terrain to be covered and an estimate of the time you should allow, based on the Naismith Formula.
Those going solo should be competent in map reading and route finding.
If walking as a team entrants should have at least one person in their group who is competent in map reading and route finding.
Once you have signed up for a walk, the exact route will be confirmed after the closing date for entrants.
