Archives Extension Will House More Books
Exciting changes are underway at Pembrokeshire Archives and Local Studies – the centre in Haverfordwest which cares for the County’s written culture, history and heritage.
The research room is being extended to accommodate more of the massive collection of local history books formerly housed in the reference section of the old Haverfordwest Library.
Archive Manager, Claire Orr, described it as an important development for the department.
“Our researchers have been asking for open access to more of the Local Studies books which, until now, have been housed in our repository” Claire explained.
“This is an exciting step forward for Pembrokeshire Archives and Local Studies and we are all looking forward to the new facility.”
However, the alteration of the research room will mean that the Archives will be closed for three weeks next month.
Claire went on: “We are open as usual in the first week of January, if people want to research their family history or house history for instance but from January 7th we will be closed to the public for three weeks until Wednesday, February 1st.
“Our staff will still be here though, taking enquiries on the phone, doing research for customers and working on the collection.”
People can also follow the progress of the building work on Pembrokeshire Archives’ Facebook page which also includes the news from 100 years ago, old photographs, adverts and stories.
Based at the Pembrokeshire Archives building in Prendergast, staff are always happy to welcome new visitors who would like to start doing their own research or would simply like to browse the local history books or old newspapers.
