Former Council Chairman Dies

A tribute has been paid to former Pembrokeshire County Council Chairman Bryan Phillips who has died suddenly at his home in Pembroke. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Mr Phillips was Chairman of the Authority in 1999 – 2000 and represented the Pembroke St Mary: South electoral division. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

He spent well over 30 years in local government, beginning with the old Pembroke Borough Council. He was 87. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

County Councillor John Allen-Mirehouse said he was sorry to hear the news. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“I served with Bryan on the old South Pembrokeshire District local authority in the days of Dyfed and he was a very able and conscientious Councillor. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“He had been Chairman of the Public Works and Services Committee in 1977 – 1978 and he wasn’t afraid to speak his mind, even if it risked upsetting a few people. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“Of course he was also Mayor of Pembroke several times and served with distinction on the Town Council for many years. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“He and I were among the first raft of Councillors to be elected when Pembrokeshire County Council was created in 1995 and his experience then proved invaluable. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“In1999 he became the fourth Chairman of the County Council and, with the support of his late wife, brought great credit to the role.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Mr Phillips, who lived in Buttermilk Close, was a retired self-employed builder and property developer. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
